A night that CMT was set to celebrate the accomplishment of five artists that had an amazing and “celebration worthy” year (CMT Artist Of The Year Awards) , CMT turned the attention to fans across the country who are suffering, including the recent Las Vegas shooting victims and the tragic events that took place during the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

Jason Aldean wanted to sing Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down‘ as an honoring performance and his friends Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town joined him on stage, making it the most emotional performance we have seen in a while!

Jason Aldean later returned to the stage to speak some powerful words:

What I want to say is that these people are going to continue to try and hold us down and continue to try and do things to us that are going to make us live in fear and be scared and not go out and do what it is we want to do…whether it’s go to a concert or go to a ball game or go to the mall or go to a movie and to those people that keep trying to do that I say F*** you, we don’t really care.
