After Hurricane Irma left the Florida Keys with no power, it was really tough for folks stranded there to call loved ones. Even though they were closed for business, The Green Parrot bar still drew a crowd, but that’s because they had a working phone.

When news got out, 500 locals lined up outside to use one of the town’s only working landlines, so they could call worried friends and family back home and let them know they survived the storm. The Green Parrot’s mechanic, Buco, rigged a phone line together from an old handset and a closed restaurant next door’s connection.

Locals said “He pirated the thing. He did it for the people. Perfect example of Key West coming together.”
