The Stanley Cup playoffs are underway and we’ve already had local kids making good. Kitchener’s Tanner Pearson scored the winning goal for the LA Kings the other night and, last night, it was Jamie McGinn’s turn. McGinn is a Fergus native and scored the winning goal last night for the Ducks. Let’s hope if they win the ultimate prize, Pearson and McGinn (and their teammates) get their full name on the trophy.

One of the coolest things about the Stanley Cup is the tradition of engraving all of the winners’ names on the trophy. In one famously scandalous case, Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington had his father’s name engraved on the Cup. It was later “X’d” out.

As you can see above, the X’s may have been preferred to some of the short forms used back in the days the Leafs were still winning Cups. One of the unfortunate short forms has been highlighted. I’m leaving the other one for you to uncover…

Go Leafs! Or whatever.
